European court rules against sexual orientation test for asylum seekers
January 27th, 2018A pro-government columnist calls for tougher measures against NGOs who help migrants, as the top European court rules against the psychological testing of asylum seekers who seek protection on the grounds of being victims of homophobic persecution.
On Thursday, in a case submitted by the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that asylum seekers cannot be subjected to psychological tests intended to determine their sexual orientation. In 2015, the Hungarian authorities used such examinations in the case of a Nigerian asylum seeker who claimed that because he was gay his life would be in danger if he was returned to Nigeria. The tests suggested that the Nigerian man was not homosexual, and his asylum application was rejected.
