Activists demand electoral reform
June 8th, 2017A liberal author compares the new movement demanding electoral reform to the Momentum movement supporting Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in Great Britain.
On 444.hu, Gergő Plankó describes how an opposition videoblog is transmuting into a political movement aimed at reforming Hungary’s strongly majoritarian electoral system. The idea of a protest movement demanding a proportional electoral law was launched by liberal activist Márton Gulyás. He has recruited people from all walks of political life for his new video manifesto, including Gyula Zagyva, a well-known radical right-wing former Jobbik MP. (Jobbik leader Gábor Vona said he intends to beat the incumbent government within the existing electoral framework.) The group plans to submit a new electoral bill by September and is preparing to launch a movement of civil disobedience in case the new law is not passed by October. Plankó suggests that their main source of inspiration is the Momentum movement founded in Britain two years ago in support of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s left-wing agenda.
