Last comments before US Presidential election
November 9th, 2016Two conservative commentators express scepticism regardless of the outcome of the Presidential election in the United States. Both of them recall that Barack Obama started out with the promise of ending an era of armed interventions eight years ago but failed to fulfil that promise.
In Magyar Nemzet, Gábor László Zord believes that after the bitter electoral campaign, America will never be the same again. The élites have lost the public confidence they have enjoyed for the past hundred years or more, he believes. As for the international consequences, the pro-government commentator thinks that a Clinton administration would “continue along the path of hegemony”. As for Donald Trump, on the other hand, he writes, “the lack of certainty is the only certainty”. Barack Obama won his presidency on an anti-war platform, but those promises collapsed in the current unprecedented Middle East chaos, he concludes.
In Magyar Hírlap, Mariann Őry sees an undeniable difference in the foreign policy options proposed by the two candidates, especially as to interference in armed conflicts abroad. Nevertheless, when it comes to Donald Trump, she also recalls President Obama’s example from 2008 when his promise of a new approach earned him the Nobel Peace Prize, but did not produce peace.
