Liberal media accused of double standards
October 20th, 2016A pro-government commentator predicts that the Western liberal media will remain silent about the suffering caused by the US-led coalition’s siege of Mosul.
In Magyar Hírlap, Zsolt Bayer wonders if the Western media will report on the civilian victims of the Mosul battle. The pro-government commentator suspects that the victims of the offensive against ISIS will receive little public attention. While Western media outlets offer frequent and in-depth coverage of the suffering of civilians in Aleppo bombed by Russia, Bayer fears that the plight of the 1.5 million inhabitants of Mosul whose lives are in danger according to the UN will go unreported. Bayer finds it nauseating that the same Western media outlets that constantly criticize the Hungarian government for alleged violations of democratic principles remain silent if Middle Eastern dictatorships allied to the US persecute their own populations or attack their neighbors. In conclusion, Bayer thinks that the US just follows its own geopolitical and economic interests in foreign policy, irrespective of whether this implies the violation of human rights or not.
