As Prime Minister Viktor Orbán prepares to propose that all EU members contribute one per cent of their budgets to finance an all-European programme to tackle the migrants crisis, a left-wing reporter believes that his proposals might be supported by international leaders.
in Népszabadság, Ildikó Csuhaj reports that at the EU summit on Wednesday this week, the Prime Minister will table a plan to fight human trafficking and put an end to the uncontrolled influx of masses of migrants, while providing a fair appraisal of asylum applications. Mr Orbán would like the European Union to set up so-called hotspots near conflict zones which are the main sources of mass emigration, rather than in Italy and in Greece as the Brussels Commission has envisaged. Such centres in Turkey, near the Syrian border, for instance, would make it possible for potential migrants to ask for refugee status or settlement permits on the spot, instead of paying criminal rings to take them to Europe. Such a plan would also imply that illegal migrants should be repelled from the borders of the European Union. If this solution is accepted, Mr Orbán is reported to be ready to contribute one per cent of the national budget to finance it. Csuhaj thinks the proposal might be seconded by several participants at the summit, in which case the Hungarian government would be ready to take its share of refugees to be granted asylum by the EU.
