Rogán’s appointment opposed by Lázár
August 25th, 2015A left-wing commentator thinks internal feuds within the ruling party have no practical importance, as long as PM Orbán is in office.
Commenting on János Lázár’s statement that he is pondering his resignation, Népszabadság’s Miklós Hargitay takes it for granted that the Minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Office intended to prevent the planned appointment of Fidesz floor leader Antal Rogán to run the Prime Minister’s cabinet. Whether the number two in the administration is called János Lázár or Antal Rogán, Hargitay says, makes no real difference. Similarly, he continues, if Budapest Mayor István Tarlós will get his way and the capital will have more funds at its disposal, rather than stumbling from debt to debt is of only minor significance, just like any other shift in the balance of power at the top of the governing party would be.
He admits that a few years ago such open conflicts and veiled criticism of the leadership would have been impossible, but he doubts if anything could be expected even from a hypothetical “moral cleansing project”. Some in Fidesz have suggested that this is now on the cards, and will be led by Parliament Speaker László Kövér. Ultimately everything depends on the Prime Minister, he concludes, and no meaningful change can be expected as long as “he is not removed from the equation”.
