Minority autonomy at Tusnad
July 25th, 2015A conservative columnist believes that instead of creating a common “supermarket”, the EU should focus more on the protection of minorities and their rights to self-determination.
Minority autonomy in the EU should be a right, Magyar Hírlap’s Gyula T. Máté comments, as the annual Fidesz summer university at Tusnádfürdő (Băile Tuşnad) in Transylvania kicks off. The conservative columnist finds it sad that European integration has focused more on creating a common market place favouring multinational companies rather than creating a diverse union where all minorities are recognized. “Minority self-determination should be taken for granted” in the EU, Máté maintains. The EU would not be worth less if its national minorities enjoyed autonomy – or even independence, he suggests. Concerning Hungarians in Transylvania, he believes that Hungarians in Romania do not want independence but only autonomy, which would make the peaceful coexistence of different ethnic groups possible.
