Pro-government pundit rejects being branded ’pro-Russian’
May 7th, 2024The publishing director of a pro-government weekly dismisses a suggestion by the Polish Prime Minister that his newspaper is pro-Russian.
On Saturday last week, Mandiner published an interview with former (conservative) Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki who criticised what he called the mainstream drive in Europe to transform the European Union into a superstate. Donald Tusk, Morawiecki’s opponent and successor as Prime Minister reacted on X, deploring his decision to give an interview to ’a pro-Russian outlet’.
Mandiner’s publishing director rebuffs Mr Tusk’s accusation that his weekly is pro-Russian. Mandiner summarises Zoltán Szalai’s interview with the Polish news site wPolitycze, in which Szalai said Hungarians know that the war is the result of Russian aggression. However, he added, Hungarians don’t believe that Russia can be driven out of the 20 percent of Ukrainian territories it has occupied and the annexation of those regions will soon become irreversible. Thus, he said, any further bloodshed is tragically futile. He hoped Prime Minister Tusk understands his responsibility to keep the traditional friendship between Hungary and Poland alive.
