Ruling party loses election in Poland
October 17th, 2023Commentators see the result as a big loss for Hungary’s right-wing government.
In Mandiner, Zsombor Zeöld, an expert on Polish affairs takes it for granted that although the governing PiS party came first in Sunday’s Parliamentary election, it will be forced out of government as even combined with its only potential coalition partner Law and Justice (PiS) will have too few seats in Parliament. He believes Donald Tusk, the leader of the main opposition party will have to form a coalition with allies with whom he differs on many substantial issues and thus their government will have a hard time in office.
In Magyar Hírlap, Zoltán Kiszelly predicts that Donald Tusk (who served as Prime Minister for seven years from 2007, then was President of the European Council until 2019, and Chairman of the European People’s Party until last year) will support Ukraine in the way the US wants.
In Magyar Nemzet, László Szőcs describes Donald Tusk as a movie character playing ‘Brussels dubbed into Polish’.
On Telex, Gergely Nyilas and Csongor Körömi write that with the departure of the incumbent government in Poland, Hungary’s leaders will lose an important ally in their confrontation with Brussels.
Népszava attributes the result to the attitude of the young generation which ‘dislikes the incumbent government’.
