Fidesz dissolves local branch after lost election
January 28th, 2023A left-wing columnist calls on the left to learn from its own failures – just as Fidesz does.
In Népszava, Gábor Czene doesn’t find it surprising that Fidesz disbanded its local group in Jászberény after the opposition candidate won the local election earlier this month, with over two thirds of the ballots. He lists six cases when local Fidesz branch organisations were dissolved recently, because of their poor electoral performance. On the one hand, Czene writes, that means that the Fidesz grassroots are far from as solid as the governing party would like the public to believe. On the other, however, it also shows that if in trouble, Fidesz doesn’t hesitate to be harsh even on its own people to put things right. Meanwhile, Czene continues, the opposition draws no lessons from its victory in Jászberény, where its parties gathered around a locally popular candidate. It still has no idea about the strategy to choose for the local elections next year. Just as Fidesz learns the lessons from its rare defeats, the opposition should learn from its rare victories, he concludes.
