Hungary blocks the transit of lethal weapons to Ukraine
March 2nd, 2022A pro-government and a left-wing columnist disagree fiercely on the government’s decision not to send weapons and not even allow their transfer to Ukraine from NATO and EU countries on Hungarian soil.
Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry welcomes the government’s decision to stay out of the war and not send arms to Ukraine. The pro-government praises the government for helping Ukrainian refugees and caring for the safety of Hungarians in Transcarpathia. She lambasts the opposition for, as she puts it, using the war as a ‘campaign tool’ in the run-up to April’s Parliamentary elections.
In Népszava, Péter Németh finds absurd the government’s claim that weapon transfers could harm Hungarians in Transcarpathia. The left-wing commentator argues that this could happen only if Russia got hold of such arms. He suggests that Hungary cannot remain neutral in the war if it wants to meet its obligations to its allies. Meanwhile, he lambasts the government and the pro-government media for claiming that the opposition wants Hungary to actively join the war.
