Former Jobbik leader on chances of opposition

Gábor Vona believes that the opposition parties face tough battles ahead which could jeopardize their unity. Such challenges will prevail even if they win the April election.

In Index, former Jobbik leader Gábor Vona ponders the chances of and challenges facing the opposition alliance in the April election. He points out that cooperation between the opposition parties is rather shaky, and the more the participants recall past conflicts, the more difficult it becomes to keep the alliance together. Although party programs are unlikely to matter much in the April election, the liberal economic policies outlined by Péter Márki-Zay may alienate left-wing parties and their voters. Vona suspects that the biggest threat to the unity of the opposition alliance is the competition between Márki-Zay and the Democratic Coalition, of which there are already some indications – a reference to PMZ’s plans to create a new Parliamentary faction, to counterbalance the influence within the opposition alliance of the Democratic Coalition. Vona concludes by pointing out that if the opposition wins, its members will have another tough fight, for key, lucrative positions to reward the luminaries who helped them in the campaign.
