Misgivings on the anniversary of US-Hungarian diplomatic relations
August 31st, 2021Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of US-Hungary diplomatic relations, a pro-government pundit fears that the new US administration will actively try and help the Hungarian opposition.
Magyar Nemzet’s László Szűcs fears that US-Hungary diplomatic relations wich were first formalized 100 years ago will soon come under severe pressure. The pro-government commentator recalls that in his letter sent on St. Stephen’s Day, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken underscored that the US will keep promoting democracy and rule of law in Hungary. Szőcs interprets this as indication that the US will increase the pressure on the Hungarian government and help opposition-leaning NGOs in the runup to the 2022 election. Szőcs also suspects that the new ambassador to Budapest who is yet to be chosen by President Biden may directly infringe on Hungary’s domestic affairs.
