US report compares Hungary and Poland to Turkey
April 24th, 2021A pro-government analyst rejects a report by three US organisations as a call for NATO to interfere in Hungarian internal affairs.
In a report on ‘US Strategy to Support Democracy and Counter Authoritarianism’, a task force set up by Freedom House, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the McCain Institute for International Leadership at Arizona State University, a recommendation is made to the US government ‘to engage on these issues with our NATO allies, given the erosion of democracy in Turkey, Hungary, and Poland.’
In Magyar Nemzet, László Földi, a former high-ranking intelligence officer and nowadays a regular commentator in pro-government media outlets, views the document as a call by organisations linked to George Soros for NATO to reign in Hungary. He dismisses such an idea as completely devoid of common sense. The NATO treaties do not authorise the alliance to interfere with member countries’ internal affairs, he writes. The absurd idea of NATO troops deployed on the streets of Budapest, Földi continues, should have been rebuked by the Brussels headquarters. However, politicians have proven too weak even to prevent senseless confrontation between Russia and the United States, let alone to protect Hungary against outlandish conspiracies, he concludes.
