Opposition parties join forces

As the main opposition parties announce their agreement to run jointly in the 2022 Parliamentary election, a pro-government and a left-wing pundit assess their chances.

On Sunday, the opposition parties (Democratic Coalition, MSZP, Párbeszéd, Momentum, Jobbik and LMP) agreed to run on a joint party list, nominate joint candidates in each of the 106 individual seat districts and announce a common campaign program in the 2022 Parliamentary election.

Magyar Hírlap’s Károly Bán sees the opposition agreement as a major victory for former PM Gyurcsány. The pro-government commentator writes that most opposition party leaders joined the agreement despite their harsh criticism of Ferenc Gyurcsány. Bán suggests that the opposition alliance is good news for George Soros as well. He hopes that the ideologically very diverse opposition alliance will not succeed in the 2022 Parliamentary election.

In Népszava, Miklós Hargitai notes that the opposition alliance will have a hard time even if they defeat Fidesz in 2022. The left-wing columnist finds it promising that the opposition parties brokered an agreement and will run jointly, but they will need to maintain cooperation after winning the election – which, Hargitai suspects, will not be an easy task.
