Government to ease shutdown

As the government prepares to announce a limited reopening of businesses and schools, a conservative columnist contends that European countries will follow Sweden’s model to keep their economies running, even if this implies more deaths.

We will soon become Sweden, and stay like that for months or even years, Gellért Rajcsányi writes on Mandiner. The conservative pundit finds the strict measures introduced in most European countries including Hungary both reasonable and morally justified. He thinks, by way of contrast, that Sweden did not do all it could have done to protect human life. Nonetheless, Rajcsányi accepts that it is time to ease the shutdown and incrementally reopen society in Hungary in order to prevent the economy from collapsing. European countries will, therefore, follow the Swedish path for a while. Those countries that open late, out of fear of an epidemic, may save more lives, but they will start from a disadvantageous grid position in the global economic race which, Rajcsányi suspects, will be even tougher than before.
