EPP prolongs the suspension of Fidesz

February 5th, 2020

A pro-government columnist interprets the EPP decision to continue the suspension of Fidesz as a sign of its ideological uncertainty and weakness.

Commenting in Magyar Hírlap on the decision by European People’s Party’s to keep Fidesz’s membership suspended, Mariann Őry thinks that the EPP has lost its vision. The pro-government columnist contends that this is why the EPP is incapable of deciding, not just about Fidesz, but about other important questions too. Őry recalls that some EPP luminaries including Slovak veteran Christian Democrat Mikulás Dzurinda want Fidesz to remain within the EPP, while the liberal wing of the People’s Party, who reject national sovereignty, she claims, want to see Fidesz out. They consider Orbán’s presence at a forum of national conservatives in Rome as proof that he is already outside the EPP family, she writes. She finds it sad that the EPP itself was absent from that meeting of national conservatives.
