DK criticized by its former Vice-President
January 8th, 2020A liberal economist who served as the Vice-President of former PM Gyurcsány’s Democratic Coalition pours scorn on the party for advocating what he regards as demagogic social welfare and anti-trade proposals.
In Heti Világgazdaság, Tamás Bauer, former Vice-President of the Democratic Coalition, looks back on last year’s performance of the party. The liberal economist acknowledges that in the European Parliamentary election the DK did better than anyone expected. Bauer, however, finds it highly problematic that the DK called for the introduction of an EU-wide minimum wage and pension as well as surplus taxes levied on multinational companies. While such promises may have increased DK’s popularity, Bauer thinks that in the long run they do not help the Democratic Coalition. There is no chance that such policies will be implemented in the EU, he suggests, and even if they were, they would harm the union. In conclusion, Bauer calls on the Democratic Coalition to avoid such reckless promises in future.
