Pensions will be raised by 2.8 per cent in January
December 17th, 2019A left-liberal columnist thinks old age pensions should be raised by at least 3.5 per cent in 2020.
Népszava’s Erika Gulyás believes the government’s annual compulsory pension hikes amount to little more than a cheap game of public relations. She quotes forecasts by business think tanks who predict a minimum 3.5 per cent inflation next year, which would justify a similar increase in pensions according to the law. Gulyás recalls that at the same time last year, the government underestimated the expected inflation rate and then retrospective hikes followed in November. She suggests that rather than making a mistake in its estimates, the government is playing a conscious popularity game, in the hope that the November pension hike will be appreciated by the elderly.
