Hungary urges dialogue with Turkey on Kurdistan

As Hungary temporarily vetoed  a declaration by EU foreign Ministers warning Turkey not to invade north-eastern Syria, a conservative analyst compares the Turkish invasion to what happened to Hungary in 1956.

The Hungarian side urged Europe to negotiate with Turkey on the Kurdish issue rather than issuing a warning. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said a warning would fall on deaf ears. Finally, he agreed for the text to be issued as a position not of the Foreign Ministers but of the High Representative of the EU on Foreign Policy.

In a passionate comment on Mandiner, Gellért Rajcsányi thinks the European Union may ‘wave its 28 fingers’ but to no avail. Turkey could be kept at bay by the United States and Russia combined, he believes. He fears that otherwise the Kurds will be wiped out from northern Syria where they have lived for centuries. He also believes that the over thirty million Kurds living in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran should have the right to build their own nation-state. For the moment, however, the Kurds are being abandoned, just like Hungary was in 1956, Rajcsányi concludes.
