DK seen as the winner of the opposition contest
May 15th, 2019A pro-government analyst predicts that the EP election will help the Democratic Coalition to become the leading force of of the opposition, although not a match for Fidesz.
In Magyar Nemzet, Dániel Deák believes that since the opposition parties have no real chance of challenging Fidesz in the elections for the European Parliament, they are again mainly competing with each other. The pro-government analyst predicts that former PM Gyurcsány’s Democratic Coalition (DK) will turn out to be the winner of the intra-opposition battle. Deák thinks that the idea of a United States of Europe put forward by the Democratic Coalition can attract enough voters to make the Democratic Coalition the leading opposition force, and thus overtake the Socialist Party. Deák predicts that the MSZP, Jobbik as well as the LMP will lose support, while Momentum may get enough votes to send an MP into the EP. Deák concludes by noting that the changes in the power balance within the opposition that may result from the EP election will have implications for the municipal elections as well, as the opposition parties plan to stand behind single candidates wherever they can and the electoral strength of each of them will be crucial in deciding whose candidates will be supported by the rest.
