A strange campaign-start
April 10th, 2019As parties begin campaigning for their candidates for seats in the European Parliament, left-wing commentators accuse all sides of failing to address genuine issues.
In Népszava, Miklós Hargitai believes Fidesz is misleading the public with its campaign centred on immigration. He believes the real aim of Fidesz is to maximise the remaining EU subsidies and channel them to its acolytes. He predicts that Fidesz will be ousted from the European People’s Party after the elections and even speculates that EP elections won’t be held in Hungary in 2024 – which means that in his view Hungary will quit the EU by that time.
On Mérce, Nóra Diószegi-Horváth thinks the opposition has still not learned the lesson of its crushing defeat at last year’s parliamentary election. Their only message is that they should be united, but they have no programme to propose to the electorate. The very disparate forces of the opposition could only be convincing, she writes, if they could explain what they would do if they managed to defeat Fidesz.
