Hungary team causes disappointment at the European Football Championship

June 22nd, 2024

A desperate commentator suggests that after the dismal performance of the national team in their first two matches at the European Championship in Germany, winning the third one is a must to save their honour.

In an unusually stern Magyar Nemzet column on Hungary’s football team, Miklós Novák fulminates against those who seek excuses for the two hopeless defeats Hungary suffered in Germany this week, first against Switzerland (3-1), then against Germany (2-0). He admits that Germany’s first goal was preceded by a clear foul in the penalty area by its captain İlkay Gündoğan, but remarks that Germany deserved to win at least by a margin of two goals. The Hungarian national team that over the past two years has defeated England and played draws with Germany and France has now shown no spirit, imagination or determination, he laments. ’If we don’t win against Scotland on Sunday, Novák concludes, we have no place in the European championship’.
