Fidesz centres its EP campaign around the danger of war
May 31st, 2024A pro-government columnist hopes that the 9 June European election and perhaps the new President of the United States will put an end to what he sees as a dangerous race towards a military conflagration.
In repeated interviews over the past few days both Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Foreign Minister Péter Szíjjártó have warned that mainstream European forces risk prolonging the Ukraine war and potentially escalating that conflict into an all-European war by increasing arms deliveries and publicly contemplating some form of direct military presence in the war theatre.
In Magyar Nemzet, László Szőcs compares mainstream European politicians to gamblers who lose ever more money in a hopeless attempt to recover what they have already lost. This is why, he believes, those leaders keep committing increasing amounts of money and weapons to Ukraine – despite the fact that Russia cannot simply be forced to withdraw from the territories it has conquered. He hopes the European elections will strengthen those who stand for peace and thus will reshape European politics in matters of war and peace. Szőcs is also confident that Donald Trump will win the US presidential elections in November and that America will then embark on a new course over the war in Ukraine.
