A sceptical liberal opinion about Péter Magyar
May 4th, 2024An opposition-leaning commentator doesn’t expect the new opposition star to produce a regime-change any time soon.
On Klubrádió, Iván Kárpáti cautioned his listeners against ’expecting a miracle’ from Péter Magyar, despite his surprisingly good results in opinion polls. (Latest polls measure his TISZA party’s electorate at between 16 and 25 percent of decided voters.) Masses of Hungarians who want to get rid of the incumbent government, he said, are dissatisfied with the traditional opposition parties. Those voters are inclined to switch allegiance, but while such a storm in public opinion is underway, Kárpáti suggests, polling figures should be taken with a pinch of salt. It will be difficult for Magyar to keep up his momentum for the two years leading up to the next parliamentary election, he adds. Meanwhile, he warns that, in addition to the ’revolutionary spirit’ Magyar radiates, his new party should also prove to have the necessary skills to govern the country. Kárpáti concludes his commentary by predicting further ’tough years ahead of us’.
