EP asks Commission to freeze transfers to Hungary
April 26th, 2024A pro-government website labels repeated criticism of the state of the rule of law in Hungary by the majority of MEPs ’rule of law hysteria’.
In its final session before the 9 June European elections, the European Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution calling for funds partially made available to Hungary to be frozen again over continued rule of law concerns. Votes in favour of the resolution came from the People’s Party, Socialist, Green and leftist MEPs. In a sentence, proposed by Momentum leader and MEP Anna Donáth, the resolution refers to ’leaked revelations by Hungary’s former minister of justice implying a lack of independence of the prosecution and political interference in criminal proceedings’ (see BudaPost, April 8).
In a report entitled ’Rule of law hysteria continues’, Mandiner describes the resolution as ’worthy of the Left’. The website quotes Fidesz MEP floor leader Tamás Deutsch condemning Hungary’s ’Dollar Left’ whose MEPs contributed to the report. Acting against one’s own country, Mr Deutsch said, amounts to treason, and he hopes those politicians will be treated accodingly by the electorate in June.
