The Gaza conflict compared to the war in Ukraine
October 13th, 2023A right-wing commentator believes that the two wars are radically different in nature and thus require different solutions.
On Pesti Srácok, Botond Bálint writes that regarding the suffering inflicted on civilian populations, all wars are comparable. He suggests however that while Ukraine, at least in theory, has an enemy with whom it is possible to reach a peace agreement, Israel has no such opponent. The Russian government, he writes, is not out to destroy Ukraine altogether, therefore peace negotiations are possible. On the other hand, the Ukrainian government is legitimate in the eyes of the population and as such, might be able to “sell” a peace deal acknowledging the painful loss of substantial territories. Hamas, by contrast, regards the annihilation of Israel as its final goal and is therefore not an enemy with whom Israel may find a compromise, Bálint asserts. He concludes from that analysis that the United States and Europe should support Israel until it irrevocably destroys Hamas, but ends his comment on a pessimistic note, remarking that “this is not what they usually do”.
