PM would like to stay in power till 2034
September 12th, 2023A liberal news site reports that in his speech to the Fidesz faithful on Saturday, PM Orbán talked about his plan to continue as Prime Minister for another eleven years.
On Telex, Tamás Fábián quotes an unnamed participant at the annual ‘Fidesz picnic’ at Kötcse, near Lake Balaton as saying that the Prime Minister now plans to stay in power four years longer than he originally wanted to, because the pandemic and the war in Ukraine ‘took four years away from us’. So he will need to stay on as Prime Minister even longer to reach the goals he set for himself, he said. The Telex source also reported that the Prime Minister attributed a dip in Fidesz’s popularity in the past 12 months to the decrease in the purchasing power of salaries, for the first time under his government. He expressed the hope that this trend will be reversed by the end of the year. According to the Telex report, Mr Orbán said that Fidesz has lost fewer potential votes than other European governing parties because its supporters are not just motivated by material concerns but by shared ideals as well.
