Most Hungarians wouldn’t fight for their country – survey
August 1st, 2023A liberal pundit thinks the government’s refusal to send weapons to Ukraine reflects the feelings of a large majority of Hungarians.
On the Heti Világgazdaság website, Sándor Révész condemns the government’s position on Ukraine as expressing a total lack of solidarity but admits that it is in full conformity with the attitude of the bulk of the population. Not only would most Hungarians not like to make sacrifices for Ukraine, he writes, but they would not even take up arms to defend their own country if it were attacked. A survey by the liberal Publicus think tank found that 62 percent of adult Hungarians would not fight against a potential aggressor and would expect NATO to defend Hungary. Révész calls that attitude a ‘parasitic mentality’ and accuses the government of acting in the same spirit in its relations with Brussels by ‘expecting the EU to give everything in exchange for nothing’.
