Hungary sets up Ministry of European Union Affairs
July 5th, 2023A liberal analyst doesn’t believe that the idea to create a new ministry came from the new Minister of Justice.
In an interview with the Free Europe website, political analyst Zoltán Vasali dismisses the official explanation whereby the Justice Ministry will be ‘cleansed’ of its European affairs department because it was on that condition that the new Justice Minister, Bence Tuzson accepted to be nominated. He will take over his post from Judit Varga on August 1st. At the same time, a new ministry will be set up from the department that has handled EU matters within the Justice Ministry and János Bóka, the new cabinet minister was already introduced to Parliament’s European Affairs Commission on Monday. Vasali finds it rational to have a ministry of EU affairs, especially at a time when Hungary is preparing for its rotating presidency of the EU a year from now. Meanwhile, he finds it difficult to believe that Mr Tuzson only accepted his nomination at the condition of leading ’a pure Justice Ministry’, because, as he put it, no one in the government can set any conditions to PM Orbán.
