Hungary doesn’t send weapons to Ukraine
March 24th, 2023As Foreign Minister Péter Szíjjártó announced that the Hungarian contribution to the European Peace Framework will be used for working for the stability of the Western Balkans and reducing migration pressure, rather than for arms shipments to Ukraine, a left-wing columnist suggests that allies are ‘fed up’ with the Hungarian government and have decided to ignore it.
In Népszava, Gábor Horváth remarks that stepping up European arms supplies to Ukraine is just one example of how western allies have begun to sidestep Hungary’s stance on Ukraine. Other recent such episodes, he continues, include the statement made by EU high representative Josep Borrell appreciating the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for Russian President Putin (See BudaPost, March 21) and the forthcoming meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission that has been convened despite Hungarian objections. Horváth writes that the Hungarian government has failed to take on board to what extent attitudes toward Ukraine ‘determine everything’. This, he believes has lost it the goodwill of NATO and EU members.
