Speeches by Biden and Putin prompt fears of a long war
February 23rd, 2023A pro-government columnist reads US President Biden’s speech in Warsaw and Russian President Putin’s address in Moscow on Tuesday to mean that neither government intends to seek peace in the foreseeable future.
In Magyar Nemzet, László Szűcs describes the day when the two leaders spoke about the war in Ukraine as ‘Black Tuesday’, for their markedly bellicose tone. He condemns the Russian aggression in Ukraine as inexcusable but accuses Mr Biden of hypocrisy when he speaks of Ukraine’s independence. Szűcs believes that the United States has ‘dug itself deep into Ukrainian politics and economy’, driven by its ‘greed for profit’. He cautions against seeing the conflict in black-and-white terms, identifying flaws on both sides. His main concern at this point is that the eastern flank of NATO should stay out of the war.
