EU criticized – from the Left
June 23rd, 2022A left-wing commentator suspects that Hungary supports Bosnia-Herzegovina’s EU candidacy application in order to paralyse the EU and keep Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia out.
In Népszava, Mária Gál thinks that Prime Minister Orbán supports Bosnia-Herzegovina’s bid to the EU (see BudaPost June 22) in order to blackmail the European Union. The left-wing columnist points out that the EU has no legal tools to regulate renegade member states. enforce basic democratic rules and show unity in geopolitics. As an example, Gál mentions the Hungarian government’s veto on the Russian oil embargo and the sanctioning of Patriarch Kirill of Russia. Gál believes that by supporting Bosnia-Herzegovina’s EU candidacy, the Hungarian government wants to blackmail the EU again. As Bosnia-Herzegovina does not meet the democratic criteria to become an EU candidate, Hungary’s insistence on its admission will make it impossible to approve the bids of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, she suggests. She concludes by predicting that the EU will sooner or later find a way to stop Hungary from vetoing important decisions by abolishing the unanimity criteria in foreign affairs issues.
