CDU new leader welcomed
December 22nd, 2021A pro-government analyst thinks that under Friedrich Merz, the CDU will return to its original conservative agenda that the party abandoned under Angela Merkel’s leadership.
Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry hopes that Friedrich Merz’s election as CDU leader will revitalize German as well as European conservatives. The pro-government analyst attributes the electoral defeat of the German centre-right parties to their embrace of what she calls left-wing liberal ideas which alienated their core voters. Őry thinks that as Angela Merkel has retired, the conservative core of the CDU will no longer be ‘oppressed by the party leadership’, and Merz will return the CDU to its original ideology.
