Jobbik leader criticised for using homophobic language against the PM
September 24th, 2021A left-wing commentator calls on opposition leaders to dissociate themselves from a statement by Jobbik leader Péter Jakab who threatened PM Orbán that he might find himself in prison and be raped by criminals there, in case the opposition wins next year’s election.
In Népszava, Bence Árpási calls Jakab’s words homophobic because the Jobbik leader said: ‘Viktor may easily become Viktória, once in jail’. Árpási also finds Jakab guilty of instrumentalising rape and of giving the impression that the opposition, once in government, would not try to eliminate the most brutal practices from Hungarian penitentiaries. He interprets what happened as indicating that ‘Jobbik’s old spirit is still alive, and has just been dampened for the sake of opposition unity’. Árpási believes certain human civilities cannot be abandoned even for the sake of a regime change. He therefore urges the rest of the opposition leaders to dissociate themselves from Jakab’s words.
