Economic recovery plans provoke controversy
April 28th, 2020A pro-government commentator accuses the left-liberal opposition of using the pandemic emergency to sow chaos and destruction. A left-wing columnist, on the other hand, questions the government’s claim that it needs no external funding to tackle the economic consequences of the virus pandemic.
In Magyar Hírlap, Pál Dippold likens the left-wing opposition to worms and accuses them of using the coronavirus emergency to spread destruction and hatred. The pro-government columnist claims that the government alone wants to overcome the pandemic and return to normal life, while the opposition parties follow ‘the orders of their boss, George Soros’ and criticize the government within Hungary and beyond. Dippold staunchly criticizes George Soros’s suggestion to the EU to issue perpetual bonds to boost the economy. He suggests that George Soros wants to secure thereby a fixed income for himself by pushing successive generations of Europeans into massive debt.
Népszava’s Miklós Bonta, on the other hand, finds it complacent of Prime Minister Orbán to claim that Hungary does not need loans in order to overcome its coronavirus difficulties. The left-wing economist recalls that only last week, Hungary issued EUR 2 billion of eurobonds so that it can spend more on stimulating the economy, in an attempt to fill holes in the budget resulting from the massive fall in revenues.
