Landslide Tory victory in UK election
December 16th, 2019A left-wing commentator attributes the Tories’ sweeping victory in the UK election to the Labour Party’s radical and demagogic messages. A pro-government columnist calls on the EU to open up to Russia.
Népszava’s Tamás Rónay interprets the UK election result as the ‘election of losers’. The left-wing pundit believes that the Labour Party was defeated because of what he sees as its leader’s demagogic far-left ideology, which incorporated elements of nationalism and chauvinism. Rónay describes PM Johnson as a ‘clown’ too. He predicts that after his landslide victory, the EU needs to show unity and broker a Brexit deal that does not jeopardise EU markets and the interests of EU citizens.
In Magyar Nemzet, Zsolt Bayer opines that the Tory victory is ‘another nail in the coffin of the EU’. The pro-government commentator finds it sad that the UK is leaving the EU, but he also thinks that one should respect the democratic will of British voters. As for Brexit, Bayer is confident that it will have no major implications for Hungarians working in the UK. He also thinks that borders between the UK and the EU will remain open. Bayer suggests that in the Visegrad countries and Italy, voters are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with Brussels. He adds that the EU should ‘stop its subservience to US interests’, and open up to Russian markets.
