EU Foreign Ministers approve new Commission
November 27th, 2019A pro-government commentator interprets the approval of Ursula von der Leyden’s new Commission by the Foreign Ministers as ‘a huge blow for pro-migration groups’.
On Monday, the Foreign Ministers of the EU approved the new European Commission, including the Hungarian Olivér Várhelyi, who will become EU Enlargement Commissioner (see BudaPost November 22). The European Parliament voted in favour on Wednesday after which the final approval by the heads of state and government is taken for granted.
Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry agrees with Foreign Minister Szijjártó, who interpreted those events as a huge victory for the Hungarian government, and a defeat for ‘pro-immigration forces’. The pro-government commentator thinks that Várhelyi’s critics were motivated by their hatred of Prime Minister Orbán. She remarks that this is the first time a Hungarian commissioner will be in charge of a politically important portfolio.
