President Áder seen as a weakling environmentalist
September 25th, 2019The nationwide left-wing daily accuses President János Áder, who represented Hungary at the UN Climate Change Summit in New York, of being a deceitful ‘environmentalist’.
In Népszava, István Marnitz questions the President’s sincerity when he sets himself up as a champion of environmental protection. It is in that posture, he continues, that Mr Áder attended the Climate Change Summit hosted by the United Nations, yet he seems to ignore that the Hungarian government is highly climate-change-skeptical. Hungary in fact refused to support the EU initiative to become carbon-neutral by 2050, and the President never objected. Marnitz reproaches Mr Áder for frequently speaking about threats to the environment when he is abroad, while in his public appearances at home he prefers to enumerate the measures taken by the government to reduce harmful emissions.
