Calls for EU-Russia rapprochement
August 23rd, 2018Pro-government analysts, commenting on President Putin’s visit to Germany and Austria, call on the EU and European governments to cooperate with Russia rather than following US interests in isolating her.
In Magyar Idők, László Szőcs hopes that Russian President Putin’s visit to Germany and Austria is a harbinger of rapprochement between Russia and the EU. The pro-government commentator finds it reassuring that Chancellor Merkel realized the importance of cooperation with Russia. He goes on to claim that Europe needs Russia in order to stabilize Syria, ‘which is essential in order to stop the wave of illegal migrants from the Middle East’.
Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry calls on the EU to cooperate with Russia rather than following the US in trying to isolate it. The pro-government columnist writes that while sanctions against Russia have not helped in the least to resolve the crises in eastern Ukraine or Syria, they have harmed the economic interests of European countries.
