The MSZP proposes opposition roundtable
April 26th, 2018A left-wing columnist hopes that the new initiative will save the leaders of the opposition from the ire of their supporters and produce new leaders to replace them some time in the future.
The MSZP and its ally, Párbeszéd (Dialogue) accepted the invitation to a meeting of the opposition parties represented in Parliament as proposed by the LMP, but came forward with their own initiative to set up a permanent ‘opposition roundtable’ with the participation of parties not represented in Parliament as well as representatives of civil society.
In Népszava, Gábor Horváth welcomes the initiative as a step toward a complete renewal of the opposition. The current leaders have lost the support of their voters, he writes, but the rank-and-file cannot simply dump them because they are the ones that have been elected to Parliament. They have to content themselves with them for the forthcoming four years. Meanwhile, however, opportunities must be created for new leaders to come forth. Horváth hopes that the opposition roundtable will be a forum where new potential leading personalities can appear and prove their worth.
