US President Trump’s Warsaw message
July 10th, 2017A left-wing commentator interprets President Trump’s Warsaw speech as a harbinger of a more isolationist US. A conservative columnist agrees with President Trump that Europe needs to seal its borders in order to defend its core values.
Donald Trump has announced a new world order, Népszava’s Tamás Rónay comments on US President Trump’s Warsaw address. The left-wing analyst contrasts President Trump’s speech with that of Barack Obama, delivered in 2014. He suggests that President Trump wants a more isolationist US which does not consider the global dissemination of democracy as its main geopolitical goal. Instead, the US is willing to cooperate with illiberal and undemocratic governments that do not respect basic human rights, Rónay notes. He acknowledges that the number of illiberal regimes has increased and democracy is on the back foot throughout the world, but he is nonetheless confident that recent successes of illiberalism will prove ephemeral.
Magyar Hírlap’s Mariann Őry agrees with President Trump that Western nation states need to protect their borders in order to defend their civilizational values. The pro-government commentator claims that the strict immigration measures President Trump advocated are in-line with the expectations of more than two-thirds of European citizens. “The vast majority of Europeans think that immigration boosts crime and terrorism, and, at the same time, jeopardizes traditional identities,” Őry writes. In conclusion, she expresses the hope that President Trump’s message will wake up Western European leaders, and they will follow Eastern European countries including Hungary in stopping the flow of illegal migrants “who are delivered to Europe by Soros-funded NGOs”.
