European People’s Party to discuss Fidesz policies
April 25th, 2017A pro-government commentator dismisses left-wing expectations about the planned People’s Party debate on the policies pursued by the Hungarian government as ‘wishful thinking’.
In Magyar Hírlap, Sándor Faggyas pokes fun at left-wing media outlets who “tremble with joy” at the thought that Fidesz might be expelled from the moderate right-wing European People’s Party. He admits that some Christian Democrat politicians, including the Luxembourgish MEP Frank Engel would be happy to see the back of Fidesz, and would even welcome severe financial sanctions in the hope that this would “finish off their system”. Hungarian left-wing politicians who have consistently lobbied for punitive measures deny that they urge sanctions that would harm ordinary Hungarians, but as Engel has revealed, this is precisely what is at stake. Faggyas quotes German Chancellor Merkel’s words at the Rome summit exactly a month ago, to prove that she would not support such a solution. In the wake of Brexit, he suggests, it would be unwise on the part of EU leaders to take steps that would accelerate “the dissolution of the union”.
