Red sludge catastrophe to be retried
February 9th, 2017A conservative commentator welcomes a ruling by the court of appeal to order a retrial of the executive staff members of the MAL aluminium company.
On Monday, the Court of Appeal of Győr overruled the acquittals of top managers of the MAL Hungarian Aluminium Company (see BudaPost February 1, 2016) and ordered a new trial over the 2010 toxic spill which killed 10 and injured dozens of people.
In Magyar Idők, Gyula Haraszti welcomes the ruling. The pro-government commentator describes that the first instance verdict that acquitted the leaders of the MAL company as outrageous. Citing the Győr Court of Appeal’s ruling, Haraszti suggests that the judge in the first instance ruling made several procedural mistakes. In conclusion he hopes that the retrial will administer justice and that those responsible for the disaster will get their due.
