Opposition to boycott the quota referendum
July 19th, 2016A veteran liberal politician agrees with the stance of those opposition parties who are calling on their supporters to boycott the referendum on compulsory migrant quotas.
In Nèpszabadság, former Free Democrat MP Ferenc Kõszeg believes that if less than half the electorate turn out at the referendum scheduled for 2 October, that would represent a defeat for the government. His concern is that such a low turnout may be difficult to achieve, because the bulk of the population strongly rejects the idea of relocating Asian migrants to Hungary. He believes that the proposal made by the small Liberal Party to vote in favour of compulsory migrant quotas is self-defeating. Therefore he recommends voters to boycottt the referendum. If they don’t dare to stay away, he suggests that they should cast an invalid vote.
