A left-wing critique of the Left
July 9th, 2015A leading left-wing pundit urges opposition leaders to quit the scene before it is too late.
In Népszava, György Sebes compares the state of the Hungarian left to that of Hungarian football in 1969 when the international team was knocked out by Czechoslovakia. He quotes captain and centre-half Kálmán Mészöly who commented at the time: “our time is up”. Sebes calls on the leaders of the left-wing parties to realise that theirs is up too. The difference is that behind Mészöly and his team-mates there was still a generation of talented players, he remarks. Today’s left-wing politicians are quite satisfied sitting in parliament and having their living guaranteed for another few years. The left-wing columnist warns that an overhaul of the Left is now urgent, if it wants to be ready for the next parliamentary elections in 2018.
